The Nickel Project
Forty members of the new contract Bridge staff volunteered on May 7th to open 24,000 envelopes and retrieve a nickel in each one. The mailer, originally for the March of Dimes, was slated to be mailed to the residents of Louisiana before Hurricane Katrina hit and since 2005 has been in a warehouse until they were given to United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, who then gave them to The Bridge. “It was a great team building project that allowed us to bond and work together,” said Grey Jones.
The 40 volunteers managed to open all 24,000 envelopes in the space of two hours. The effort raised $1, 256.27. The funds will be used for the new volunteer program, Friends of the Bridge. “I want to personally thank all of those who volunteered to help with the Nickel Project. We could not have done it without you,” said Alonzo Peterson, community affairs director for The Bridge.
