Benefiting Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance - Operators of The Bridge, Dallas’ Homeless Assistance Center
Saturday, November 13, 2010, 8AM-Noon - City Hall Plaza in Downtown Dallas
Thousands of walkers, runners and joggers will take steps to end homelessness in Dallas at the 4th Annual Help the Homeless WalkAThon & 5K. New this year is the addition of a 5K Run through Downtown Dallas. In addition, there will be a family fun walk, food, music and other fun activities.
Back by popular demand is Vocal Trash, an amazing group of musicians playing high octane music that will definitely get hearts pumping. New this year is the Good Neighbor Kids’ Zone, which will include zaniness from affable clown duo Slappy and Monday, dazzling performances from Lone Star Circus, face painters, interactive games, crafts and more!

Chris was both the inspiration and associate producer for the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, released

BRIDGE BUILDER AWARD RECIPIENT – MIKE RAWLINGS

In 2005, Mike Rawlings answered the call of Mayor Tom Leppert to become the City of Dallas
Homeless Czar and Board Chair of the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance. Over the past 5 years Mike
has put his heart and soul into ending homelessness in Dallas. Under Mike’s leadership the City of
Dallas has embarked on an innovative model and strategic plan that is committed to best practices,
accountability and compassion. He has built a strong and effective community-wide coalition
comprised of health care and social service providers, government at all
levels, and the private sector.
As a community change-agent, Mike has been the catalyst for many positive results;
- Dallas’ chronic homelessness is down by 57%
- Through public and private funding Dallas completed The Bridge, a new assistance center in 2008
- The Bridge serves over 1200 guests per day
- There was a 16% reduction in crime in The Bridge’s neighborhood during the first year of operation and an additional 13% reduction in crime during The Bridge’s second year
- Nearly 1500 former homeless individuals found jobs
- Over 775 former homeless individuals in Dallas have found permanent housing
- A strategic partnership was formed with the Dallas Housing Authority
- Advocacy to help the homeless has strengthened within the federal, state, county, and local leadership levels
- The US Conference of Mayors recognized Dallas with a 2009 City Livability Award for the innovative approach to ending homelessness and the success of The Bridge
